Associate Professor Dr. Özgür Baytut's stakeholder meeting for the European Union-supported ALGAWA Project was held on April 8th at the Faculty of Engineering of Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMÜ).
The ALGAWA (Utilization of Macroalgae Biofilter for Wastewater Treatment) project, in which Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMÜ) is a partner, has entered the implementation phase with activities carried out under the European Union Interreg VI-B NEXT Black Sea Basin Programme. The initial coordination meetings and technical evaluations conducted within the scope of the project have clarified the basic work plan and implementation steps for the project process.
Within the scope of the project, work has accelerated on the design, pilot application, and testing processes for floating wetland systems to be developed using a nature-based solutions (NBS) approach. These systems aim to remove pollutants in aquatic environments using sustainable methods by utilizing the natural purification capacity of macroalgae.
The ALGAWA project; ●The project aims to increase the applicability of innovative solutions at both scientific and practical levels by bringing together: ●developing solutions that mimic the workings of nature, ●applied research, ●active participation of local stakeholders.
Within this scope, it is planned to actively involve local governments, academia, industry representatives, and different segments of society in the process through Living Lab events to be organized during the project; thus, it is aimed to increase awareness and dissemination of the developed solutions. Project outputs are expected to contribute to the improvement of water quality, the protection of ecosystems, and sustainable environmental management on a regional scale.
Project Partners: ●International Hellenic University ●National Institute for Marine Research and Development "Grigore Antipa" ●Ukrainian Scientific Center of Ecology of the Sea ●Ondokuz Mayıs University
